Just having a quiet night in with a bunch of mates (Tuesdays and Sundays are visiting nights). For a change, we’ve been watching a few DVDs that we haven’t looked at in a while (rather than new stuff). Started off with the first part of the Dune mini-series that was produced by the Sci-Fi Channel, [...]

Way back in the day there was no such thing as a separate science fiction “genre”. If you go back far enough (sometime in the 19th Century), there were no separate genres at all, just a single, all-encompassing “literature” umbrella.
Then, with the spread of literacy in the “Western World” and the advent of technology for [...]

One of the best comics that I’ve read in recent months is Eternals, a seven-part mini series produced by Marvel Comics, written by Neil Gaiman, and with art by John Romita, Jr. It’s a reimagining of Jack Kirby’s classic Eternals series from the 1970s and 1980s, and really elevates what was really a second [...]

I love to browse the Sci-Tech page (page 154) on BBC1’s Ceefax (teletext) service. There’s always a lot of interesting snippets culled from various sources such as the New Journal of Physics, Nature and Science magazines. My favourite areas of interest are astronomy and space exploration, and palaeontology, and here are a couple of palaeontology [...]

The first two episodes of Heroes, Genesis and Don’t Look Back, aired earlier tonight (Wednesday 25th) on BBC2, followed by a short ten minute behind the scenes thingy, Heroes Unmasked. I must say that I’m absolutely delighted. I’ve been following its progress since it started on satellite TV, and it’s nice to see this series [...]

So the Cassini mission has found another moon orbiting Saturn? That brings the total of moons around the ringed planet up to a total of sixty. Sixty moons! Sounds mighty impressive, doesn’t it?
It’s a little ‘un, only a rock, really, at only 2km (1.2 miles) in diameter. That’s 4-5 times smaller than the mere “meteor” [...]

The books keep on rolling in (mostly SF), faster than I can keep up with reading them. I sometimes wonder if I’ll ever get to read even half of them (I’ll be lucky) before I die of old age. But it won’t be for lack of trying on my part.
Lessee - over the past two [...]

Another quiet night in, and I’ve been doing a bit of reading. It started off with a bit of history - a couple of chapters of The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes - and then, as a direct result, I took a notion to read two classic alternate histories, He Walked Around [...]

Now Watching - Renaissance (DVD)
I’ve been spending a nice, restful night at home, watching a very unusual movie on DVD, and I must say that the last (slightly more than) hour and a half has absolutely flown by. It’s a cop movie, with action, car chases, kidnapping and murder. More than enough action to keep [...]

Now Playing - “Dancing in Outer Space” by Atmosfear
Well, I’m back after a short holiday break, and just wondering what to post about next. I’ve been musing on my next big posting on science fiction, comics, or some other serious stuff, and, as always, I’ve put on some music to inspire me and help me [...]
